{our story}

In 2001, Summit Community Church (formerly known as Arvada Grace Fellowship) in Westminster, Colorado, made the decision to bring its season as a church to a close. Believing that new life for many communities could sprout out of the death of one community, the leadership sold all the church’s assets and funded the start of a new non-profit, The Genesis Project, that would help to seed life among new developing churches.
In the early days, we convened an annual gathering for spiritual renewal, but our primary effort was offering direct grants to new churches. We funded a number of efforts in the Denver area, and through various means, we have also partnered with church plants in Iowa, Wyoming, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Over the years, however, we felt a distinct call toward a different way of resourcing those serving new churches. Most church planters have taken great steps of risk and faith in order to follow Jesus in making God’s love known. However, several of us had a growing unease with some of the church planting culture we experienced (driveness, ambition, exhaustion, spiritual hollowness and dead hearts). While our experiences emerged from the uniqueness of our personal stories, we sensed God inviting us to connect with those who walked a similar path (perhaps alone). We believe our call is to encourage a counter-current. We desire to come alongside those leading new churches and cultivate our Spirit-induced instincts, reminding us that: despite the hype, true gospel work is often long and slow; our identity does not rise or fall on the success of our church plant; what we most need is not tools and tactics but Jesus and the gospel. The Genesis Project falls within historic orthodox Christianity, and we work within many streams of the church. |
